Part 3 of the dialogue about our Social Creed – feeding the poor plus more

I appreciate the responses to part one about creation. Yes, we sometimes get ahead of ourselves in the process of how best to be responsible for God’s creation and create other problems. That is why it is so important to continue the dialogue.

Last Sunday, the third part of our series addressed how much of scripture is given to instructing us to be sure that people do not go hungry, are treated right in the workplace and visited in prison. I made the statement that any gospel which does not bring good news to the poor is not the gospel of Jesus Christ.

This week we have given our congregation and our readers out there an opportunity to help feed the poor by logging on to FreeRice. FreeRice is sponsored by the United Nations World Food Program. For every right answer you input, 10 grains of rice will be donated to feed the hungry. 10 grains is not much, if anything, you may say. I might have thought so, too, until 2004.

We were in the country of Liberia at a United Methodist Church in a leper colony. We had just spent $500 on a truckload of large bags of rice to bring to all who lived at the colony. We unloaded the bags of rice inside the church and, as people continued to come to the church with their pieces of cloth and bowls for their share of rice, I began to see how very much rice meant to their welfare. It was Saturday afternoon, and as we emptied the last sack of rice, I looked down on the floor and saw grains of rice scattered across the front of the church. I remarked to my friend, “Before we leave, we need to sweep up those grains of rice we spilled.” She said, “There will not be a grain of rice left on the floor in the morning.”

As we were leaving the church, I looked up at the front, and there was a large group of little children huddled around the rice. They came out of the circle, each carefully carrying a few grains of rice in their cupped hands so as not to spill a grain. The floor was spotless! Yes, 10 grains of rice makes a difference!! Thoughts?

Creation

We just kicked off a 4-part sermon series on a dialogue about the Social Creed of the United Methodist Church. Part I of the Creed concerns creation. We say that biblically, we know that God created everything good, that God wills healing and wholeness for all creation, and that we are called to participate in mending the brokenness of creation. We say that it is essential to keep the dialogue going on how we fulfill our responsibility for creation.

Today we talked about such things as genetic engineering of seeds for purposes of reducing the need for pesticides. We also talked about why we would have such things as Social Principles. We would very much like to hear your thoughts. What do you think?

FUMC is conspiring this year to celebrate the Advent season in all its mystery and wonder. This morning’s Uncluttered Heart devotional calls upon us to ask ourselves what challenges are keeping us from reaching the stillness of God. What do we need to do in order to find a quiet space this season. For many of us, it is purposefully setting aside the time – just a small piece of it. For others, it is simplifying our “list” of things to do and buy during this season. Whatever it is for you, I hope that you take the time to stop, breathe, and listen for God’s wisdom and instruction.

Feeling like a Broken Egg?

Next week our church, like many other churches, is sending out postcards to area homes, inviting people to come home for Easter. The eggs are named faith, hope and love.

A variation of that popular theme is the new “Feeling like a Broken Egg.” Four volunteer writers and counselors are preparing helpful messages for those who log on to www.aBrokenEgg.com

If you are feeling like a broken egg right now, please take a moment and log on to this excellent online resource.

I hope that all of you out there are enjoying this unique “square root” day! There are very few days like this one; you know, the square root of 9 is 3! 3 squared is 9. Today is 3/3/9! I don’t know what you are doing to celebrate. I brought “Root” beer for the staff meeting this morning! It occurred to me that the Root of FUMC is Christ and that Root is with each of us every day. Be rooted!!

February emphasis is Presence

Dear Church Family,

In 2009, we are emphasizing monthly one part of the covenant we make when we become part of the United Methodist Church. If you have not already heard from the pulpit, a significant change has been made to the question the church asks of its new members.

We now ask, “Will you be loyal to Jesus Christ through the United Methodist Church and uphold it by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness?” The words in bold are our new addition.

Isn’t that amazing? Amazing that it took us this long to articulate what we intended all along!! When you come to worship on any given Sunday during “Ordinary Time,” you will find that we are emphasizing one of the five elements of the covenant. In January, we emphasized prayer. We offered a prayer vigil and celebrated having a community of faith where we can share in each other’s struggles and joys.

In February, we are emphasizing presence.

According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, presence is “the fact or condition of being present.”

Here is my challenge to you. Think of someone whose presence means so much to you in worship. Then tell that someone how much their presence means to you!!! What a difference you can make in that someone’s life!

I am truly looking forward to your presence on Sunday!

Grace and Peace,
Judith
